Virgie Wilkes

November 14, 1918 — September 8, 2017

Mrs. Virgie Steele Wilkes was born in Trinity, NC on November 14, 1918. She was the daughter of late William Thomas and Della Hargrove Steele.

Her earthly journey ended on Friday, September 8, 2017 at the age of 98.

Virgie was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, where served faithfully as a Communion Stewardess, Sunday school member and a member of the Methodist Women Auxiliary.  She was fondly known by her family and friends as a charitable person.  The neighborhood children affectionately remember her.  She gave to numerous organizations such as Paralyzed Veterans, Veterans Association, The Red Cross, The American Heart Association, Boys Town and The Children’s Home to name a few.  She loved to cook and read.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo Wilkes Sr., her parents, and siblings.

Survivors whose lives where enriched by her presence include her step-sons, Alonzo (Lillian) Wilkes Jr. and Ernest Wilkes; other relatives include: Roger (Jessie) Steele Jr., Paul Steele, Fonda S. Crawford and Rachel S. (Bill) Tucker; step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren; a host of great nieces and nephews, other in-laws and friends.
