Reflections of Life for Shepherd Mother Barbara Battles

District Elder Barbara Jean Miller Battles, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mentor, and friend entered into eternal rest on April 28, 2025, at the age of 71, surrounded by her loving family at Atrium Health High Point, NC. Born on January 12, 1954, in Cleveland, Ohio, Barbara was the sixth child of the late Ross Miller and Johnnie Mae Miller Brand. Barbara’s family moved to Philadelphia, PA during her childhood, where she grew up, received her education at South Philadelphia High School, and nurtured her passion for sewing and fashion. Known as a true fashionista, she had an impeccable sense of style that was admired by many. Barbara spent her summers visiting family in Palatka, Florida, where she formed a childhood friendship with Otis Battles, Sr. That friendship blossomed into true love, leading to their union in July 1975. Together they raised three beautiful children, Otis Jr., Jaleel, and Aseelah, creating a legacy deeply rooted in faith, family, and love.

A Journey of Faith and Ministry

Barbara’s spiritual journey began at New Temple Baptist Church in South Philadelphia where she was baptized and accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. In the early 1980’s, her family moved to High Point, NC. She continued her spiritual journey at New Bethel Baptist Church in High Point, NC under the leadership of Rev. John Mason and was later called to ministry and licensed under the Rowan Baptist Association. In her desire for growing deeper in her faith, Barbara would often visit Community Holiness Church in Jamestown, NC with her mother under the leadership of Apostle Angeline Sumpter (who was then serving as Assistant Pastor). It was at Community Holiness Church where she was introduced to the power of God. Her spiritual transformation deepened as she was filled with the Holy Ghost, with the evidence of speaking in tongues, according to Acts 2:4. Her commitment to worship and service permeated all aspects of her life. In 1987, her eldest son Otis founded the High Point Community Fellowship Gospel Choir where she served as the choir’s spiritual advisor, laying the foundation for what would later become The Greater Power and Praise Tabernacle in April 1999. She holds the honor of being the ministry's first founding member and was baptized in Jesus' name by her son, Pastor Otis Battles, Jr., and the late Bishop Kenneth H. Moales, Sr. Barbara’s selfless service to the ministry spanned decades. From conducting prayer meetings and teaching bible classes to visiting the sick and exalting God’s name through fiery exhortations, she faithfully shepherded her community. Her dedication was recognized in 2001, when she was ordained as an Elder and appointed Assistant Pastor. Her unwavering service and dedication led to her elevation to District Elder in 2017 under the Pentecostal Churches of Jesus Christ, now known as Covenant Keepers International Alliance (CKIA) under the leadership of Bishop Hezekiah Walker.

A Life of Impact Beyond the Church

Barbara was also a dedicated public servant, spending years working with the High Point Police Department and Guilford County Sheriff’s Department before retiring in the early 2000's. Retirement didn’t slow her down; she became a powerhouse of community impact by founding Mema King’s Kids Learning Center, a thriving childcare center and beacon of love for High Point's children. In 2020, she became the Co-Owner of Miss Johnnie Mae’s LLC. She was the workhorse behind this successful food-truck business that has satisfied the appetites of thousands all along the east coast, from Boston to Florida and everywhere in between. She was known for the smothered turkey wings and signature Russian tea.

Family First

Family was at the heart of Barbara’s life. She was a devoted and nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her home radiated love and support, and her grandchildren lovingly called her “Mema.” She was their pillar of strength and pride. Her legacy as an encourager, visionary, and community builder extended far beyond her immediate family. Barbara was also an extraordinary philanthropist deeply committed to giving back to the community. Whether feeding the homeless, mentoring single mothers, or leading charitable efforts, her heart knew no bounds. She was honored with the Legacy Award in 2024, recognizing her outstanding contributions to her community.

A Legacy of Love and Faith

Barbara’s life was nothing short of extraordinary. Her vibrant life was filled with joys such as cooking (she was a culinary force), traveling, and attending church convocations. Whether embarking on new adventures or simply sharing stories around the dinner table, Barbara embraced life with energy and faith. To know District Elder Barbara Jean Miller Battles was to feel her light, warmth, and grace. Her faith, generosity, and love touched countless lives, making an impact that will last for generations. Pastor Barbara Battles was preceded in death by three brothers; Ross William Miller, John Henry Miller, Charles Von Miller, one sister; Versie Ann Miller Freeman, stepfather; Willie Brand, brother-in-law; Carlos Battles.
