Maxine Josephine (Watkins) Barber, 76, of High Point, NC departed this earthly life on August 14, 2017 following a brief stay at Hospice Home at High Point. She was born October 6, 1940 in Ansonville, NC to the late William and Rosetta Watkins. She lived many years in Portsmouth, VA while her husband of thirty-five years, James L. Barber, served in the United States Navy. Maxine gave her life to Christ at an early age, dedicating her life to His service. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Portsmouth, VA, but worshipped locally at The Journey Church of the Triad. She retired after twenty years as a Certified Nursing Assistant with Wesleyan Arms Nursing Home (currently Providence Place). Soon after, she returned to work as a CNA with Caring Hands Home Health, Inc. until January 2016. Maxine was known for her beautiful smile, generous spirit, and genuine love of people. She spent much of her free time visiting the sick and shut-in.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband on December 21, 1999. Also preceding her in death were six sisters: Mary Rose Little, Esther Lilly Rippy, Margaret Barber, Ruth Harris, Ruby Reed, Mildred Clark; and one brother, Charles Watkins.
Those left to cherish her memory include three children: James Barber, Jr of Chesapeake, VA, Toby (Marie) Barber of Durham, NC, and April (Anthony) Rayner of Greensboro, NC; sister, Elaine Little of Ansonville, NC; brother, James Spencer Watkins of Ansonville, NC; grandchildren: Tiffani Barber, Natalie Barber, and Asher Rayner; along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
