In Loving Memory of Madak Dhieu Barkuei August 18, 1953 – June 20, 2025
Ustaz or Uncle Madak D. Barkuei, as many affectionately called him, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, and community leader. He passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of June 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 71 years old.
Madak is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Mary Adut Gakemer, and his cherished children: Jona, Mokol, Yar, Amekjang, Barkuei, Buoi, and Dhal. He was a proud grandfather to Zezow (Deng), Yom, Ayen, Achol, Adior, Abuk, Yardit, Awak, Barko, and Brille (Ajak). He was the eldest of three siblings and is also survived by his brother Makuei and sisters Achot and Nyanthon.
Born on August 18, 1953, in Rumbek, South Sudan, to parents Ajak Gaarand Dhieu Barkuei, Madak's life was a testament to resilience, purpose, and an unyielding devotion to his family, students, and community. From humble beginnings, he rose to become an influential educator and a respected figure both at home and abroad.
Madak began his academic journey at Rumbek Primary School, continued at Tonj Institute, and later attended the University of Khartoum and the University of Cairo. Through his education, he cultivated a lifelong passion for learning and teaching. As an educator, he dedicated himself to empowering future generations, inspiring countless students to pursue knowledge, discipline, and excellence with integrity.
Known for his gentle spirit, wisdom, and unwavering kindness, Madak had the rare gift of making everyone around him feel seen, valued, and heard. Whether through offering guidance, listening with care, or simply sharing a warm smile, he exemplified humility, compassion, and strength.
Madak’s love for his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family was the foundation of his life. His legacy continues through them and in the lives of the many students, friends, and colleagues whose paths he helped shape.
In accordance with his wishes, Madak will be flown back to his birthplace of Rumbek, where he will be laid to rest among his ancestors, in the land that gave him his roots.
A celebration of his life will be held on July 26, 2025, where family, friends, and community members will gather to honor his memory, reflect on his extraordinary life, and say their final goodbyes before he is returned home.
Madak D. Barkuei’s light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His life was a gift, and his memory will forever be a blessing.
