Louis Lee Powell, Sr.
Devoted Husband and Father
Louis Lee Powell, Sr., age 64, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 15, 2025, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, surrounded by his loving family.
Louis was born on October 20, 1961, in Pitt County, North Carolina, to the late Cecil Powell and Annie Grimes. He was a devoted family man who deeply loved his wife and children and was well known for proudly speaking of them at every opportunity.
Shortly after meeting Dorothy, Louis knew she was the one, and he soon asked for her hand in marriage. Their union became a lifelong partnership rooted in love, friendship, and faith. Together, they were blessed with three children: Veronica, Shanice, and Louis Jr.
Louis was admired for his warm sense of humor, wise counsel, and unwavering integrity. His Christian journey began at Friendship Holiness Church, where he was ordained as a Trustee under Bishop Robert Marshall and later ordained as a Deacon under Bishop Elsie Gaines. He was a founding member of the Friendship Holiness Church Male Chorus and was recognized for his rich baritone voice, often leading songs such as “I’m Working on a Building,” “There’s Gonna Be a Meeting,” and “Oh Lord, Show Me the Way.”
He later served faithfully at High Point Deliverance under the leadership of the late Apostle Frank Smith, Jr., where he was one of the leading deacons. Louis eventually joined God’s United House of Grace & Mercy under the leadership of Apostle Carolyn Lazenby. There, he remained a dedicated and active member, serving as Chairman Deacon for seven years, as well as supporting the men’s ministry and other church responsibilities.
Outside of his church service, Louis cherished spending quality time with his family and was especially known for his signature fried chicken, which brought joy to many gatherings.
Louis was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Powell, and his uncle and best friend, Roosevelt Roberson.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Dorothy Powell, of the home; three children, Veronica Powell, Shanice Powell, and Louis Powell, Jr. (Jessica Love), all of High Point, North Carolina; one grandchild, Alyna Powell, of High Point; his mother, Annie Grimes, of Greenville, North Carolina; two brothers, William (Jeanette) Grimes, Jr., of High Point and Milton (Trina) Grimes of Washington, North Carolina; one sister, Delois (Kelly) Purvis of High Point; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
Louis will be remembered for his bubbly personality, infectious smile, and fiery spirit that uplifted and strengthened everyone he encountered. His life made a lasting impression, and his legacy will be felt for generations to come.
