Jennie Mae Johnson

The life of Jennie Mae Smith-Johnson. Jennie was a wonderful woman that was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished. Our “Jent,” as she liked to be called, was dedicated to her family, her friends and her church, Greater New Hope Baptist Church. She made the best sweet potato pies and is known for her decorative skills and her work ethics.

Jent’s life began January 30, 1952, the ninth child to Douge  and Geneva McIntyre-Smith in Maxton, NC. At a young age Jent relocated to High Point NC and went to school at Griffin Middle school and Central High School.

Jent’s employment history was extensive, after high school Jent started working, first at Indian Head Hosiery, several other mills and factories in and around High Point.  She was respected for her hard work and attention to details. She was an inspector and supervisor and then finally at Hayworth Mill until her early diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. She had two philosophies regarding work “work hard and save” her nephews would call her “squeaky” because she avoid spending money unnecessarily.

Her Calling in life was to work with young people. She spent 10 plus years as a volunteer Shining Stars Youth choir president. She enjoyed taking the kids on shopping trips, raising funds for the choir and youth concerts.

Jennie Mae Smith-Johnson will be deeply missed by her children, family, friends, and her church family.

Loved ones that cleared the path for Jent are her father, Douge Smith; her mother, Geneva McIntyre-Smith, seven brothers, Douglas Smith, James Smith, William Smith, Bobby Smith, Leonard Smith, Nezell Smith, Andy Smith, and a siste,r Betty Leak.

She is survived by her children Tracy (Cardo) Grant Sr. of Greensboro, NC, Robbin Smith of Greensboro, and NC, Ronald Johnson of High Point, NC; Jent’s grand children were her heart and joy. There’s no denying that, and they loved her. They are Latoya Wall, Tyeisha Smith, Cardo Grant Jr. and Tamara Grantt three great grand children, Aaliyah Byers, Victor Smith, and Paislee Smith- Dudley. Additionally she is survived by her stepmother Eunice Smith of High Point, NC, her brothers,  Edmond Smith and Levon Smith both of Baltimore, MD; sisters Pearlie(Charlie) Hawkins, Dorothy Smith, Mary(Knox) Quick, and Katie Hope of High Point, NC, special niece, Latasha(Sherman) Greggs, a variety of nieces and nephews, family and friends.
